Learning to Breathe Again

Blue, the fifth in the series, is hope.

Blue was a long time coming. It was painted a few years after green. The death of my youngest daughter—two and a half years after my husband—put a hole in my heart so deep I couldn’t even breathe, much less paint. I couldn’t start over with red, orange, yellow, green… so I did nothing, for years. But life goes on regardless of how we feel.

Painted during a turning point in grief, this piece holds both weight and release. Between the depths, there is space—just enough to begin breathing again.

Learning to Breathe Again immerses you in a fluid, oceanic world where movement and stillness coexist. Rich layers of turquoise, indigo, and cerulean sweep across the canvas in tidal rhythms, punctuated by darker currents and vertical drips that evoke depth, gravity, and descent. The thick, sculptural textures feel alive—like water in constant transformation—while subtle luminous areas suggest pockets of light breaking through the depths.

You may even see figures reaching out to each other despite the separation of the veil.
